DEFINITION OF SUSTAINABLE ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Sustainable entrepreneurship means developing and managing a business that creates economic value, respects the environment, and generates social value for communities and future generations. Sustainable entrepreneurship combines traditional entrepreneurial principles (innovation, risk-taking, profit) with sustainability objectives, namely: reducing environmental impact, using resources efficiently, promoting social inclusion, and ensuring economic equity.

SUSTAINABLE ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

The European Union has made sustainability a central pillar of its economy through a series of policies and programs such as:

European Green Deal

Launched in 2019, it is the EU’s main strategy for achieving climate neutrality by 2050. It encourages companies to innovate through energy efficiency, emission reductions, and the circular economy. It includes initiatives such as: Circular Economy Action Plan, Farm to Fork, and Fit for 55.

Green SME and Start-up Strategy

The European Commission promotes green entrepreneurship by providing financial support through the LIFE Programme (funding environmental and climate projects), Horizon Europe (supporting green innovations), and the European Innovation Council (EIC) (grants and investments for sustainable start-ups).

EU Taxonomy and ESG Reporting

Through Regulation (EU) 2020/852, the EU introduced a “taxonomy” — a common classification system defining which economic activities are considered environmentally sustainable. In addition, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requires large companies (and soon SMEs) to report on their environmental and social impacts.

Education and Sustainable Entrepreneurial Culture

The EU promotes entrepreneurial education through Erasmus+ programmes and initiatives such as “GreenComp – European Sustainability Competence Framework”.

Global benchmarks for sustainable entrepreneurship:

AGENDA 2030 AND THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGs)

Adopted by the United Nations in 2015, Agenda 2030 establishes 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Sustainable entrepreneurship directly contributes to SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

UN Global Compact

The world’s largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative. More than 15,000 companies have committed to principles related to human rights, the environment, labour, and anti-corruption.

ESG Investments and the Circular Economy

Globally, investors are increasingly focusing on companies with strong ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) performance. The circular economy is becoming the dominant model, based on reuse, recycling, and regeneration rather than linear consumption.

Green Innovation and Technology

Sectors such as renewable energy, electric mobility, sustainable agriculture, green construction, and low-carbon digital economy solutions are experiencing significant growth.
